The Story

people in front of electric vehicle

Transport is the single largest contributor to air pollution in Scotland – but NHS Tayside is proving that public services can be part of the solution. Currently, two-thirds of the organisation’s vehicle fleet is either electric or hybrid. With 60% made up of fully electric vehicles (EVs) and a further 6% hybrids, NHS Tayside is significantly ahead of the national average, demonstrating a bold commitment to decarbonisation.

An ambitious fleet replacement programme is underway to phase out the remaining fossil fuel vehicles. The aim is clear: transition all small vehicles under 3.5 tonnes to electric by the end of 2025, wherever operationally possible. This year alone, an additional 15 petrol and diesel vehicles have been retired and replaced with clean, zero-emission EVs.

NHS Tayside’s efforts to reduce transport emissions go beyond its own vehicles. Recognising that healthier travel benefits everyone, the organisation has introduced a range of initiatives to support staff and the public in making more sustainable choices:

  • Cycle to Work Scheme: Staff can access tax-efficient bike purchases, making it easier to commute by bike.
  • Wee Walk Works Wonder: A campaign that encourages short walks as part of daily routines, promoting better health and lower emissions.
  • Go NHS Tayside Journey Planner: Featured on all patient appointment letters, this online tool helps people plan their journeys in more sustainable ways.

For NHS Tayside, sustainability is a core part of delivering better health outcomes. Dr Emily Stevenson, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, explains: “NHS Tayside is proud to be playing its part by transforming its fleet and supporting active travel. As Scotland moves towards its net zero target, NHS Tayside remains committed to leading by example and creating a healthier, more sustainable future for all.” With a clear vision, strong leadership, and practical action, NHS Tayside is showing what’s possible when environmental responsibility is built into everyday decisions. As Scotland progresses on its net zero journey, NHS Tayside is not only keeping pace – it’s setting the standard.

Success & Outcomes

As of mid-2025, 66% of the fleet is now low-emission - 60% fully electric and 6% hybrid - placing the organisation ahead of the national average. The recent replacement of 15 fossil-fuel vehicles with EVs is expected to cut carbon emissions and support long-term decarbonisation goals. NHS Tayside is also on track to meet the Scottish Government’s target of transitioning all small vehicles under 3.5 tonnes to electric by the end of 2025 where operationally possible. Staff uptake of initiatives like the Cycle to Work Scheme and “Wee Walk Works Wonders” will be monitored to gauge engagement with active travel, while promotion of the Go NHS Tayside Journey Planner on appointment letters encourages sustainable transport choices, with further data collection planned.
